Keltz Arena
The Donald E. "Casey" Keltz Arena is a multi-purpose facility. Originally built in 1968 the arena had a dirt floor.. A multipurpose floor was installed in the 90's which can now be used for basketball, rodeo practice, volleyball, or tennis. The arena also hosts multiple banquets and events throughout the year.Â
The Keltz Arena was dedicated November 4, 2000.Â
In respectful acknowledgment of the leadership, sportsmanship and character epitomized by Casey Keltz Athletics Director Head Men's Basketball Coach, Head Football Coach, Instructor Emeritus.Â
Known as "The Dean of the Frontier Conference" Casey Keltz began his coaching career at Western in 1965 as head football coach. He also served as head Track and Baseball Coach at various times. he is one of the few coaches to be named Frontier Conference Coach of the Year in two different sports.Â
As Head Basketball Coach, Keltz' career spanned over 29 years and he amassed over 400 victories. Two trips to the NAIA National Tournament highlighted his tenure. The last trip in 1989, Western seeded 32nd, shocked the #1 seeded and defending national champions Grand Canyon of Arizona in the first round. The team, made up of primarily in-state athletes epitomized Keltz' trademark philosophy of recruiting quality Montana Student Athletes. Keltz' honors include induction into the University of Montana Western Athletics Hall of Fame, Montana Coaches Hall of Fame and the NAIA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Casey also received the Montana ambassador of Amateur Athletics Award.
