Bulldogs Falter in Season Finale

Ashland, Ore. - The 23rd ranked Montana Western Bulldogs (6-4, 6-4) fell in the regular season finale at Southern Oregon (6-4, 6-4) 37-10 crushing the Bulldogs hopes of a conference championship.

With Rocky Mountain College falling at home to Montana Tech, all the Bulldogs had to do was win the game to earn a share of the conference title. Unfortunately the Bulldogs couldn't finish the script for the happy ending. The offense struggled early. The Bulldogs quickly found themselves in a 17-0 hole. Senior safety Tristen Clark provided a spark when he intercepted SOU quarterback Wyatt Hutchinson's pass, but the Bulldogs couldn't hang onto the momentum going three-and-out on the next possession. The Bulldogs converted on just 6-17 on third down attempts.

Jon Jund got the Bulldogs on the board lin the second quarter, when he found Nate Simkins for a seven yard score, bringing the score to 17-7. However that was as close as the Bulldogs would get as SOU opened a 27-10 halftime lead. Simkins finished the game with three catches for 35 yards and the touchdown. 

Jund (18-41-0) finished with 217 yards passing but was under duress the entire game. He had little time to get rid of the ball, getting hit six times and sacked five times and losing a fumble.


Game Notes:
  • Running back Kylar Prante finished the game with over a 100 yards from scrimmage, 85 on the ground and 35 through the air. 
  • Jason Ferris an All-American hopeful had 12 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery. He leads the conference in total tackles and is third int he nation in tackles per game. 
  • The Bulldogs failed to have a 100 yard rusher this season. 
  • SOU is among the nations best in sacking the quarterback, they sacked the Bulldogs six times. 
  • The Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the eight team conference, They finish in a four-way tie for second, and had a chance to claim their first conference title since 2004. 
  • After 30 plus points a game for the first seven games of the season. the Bulldogs had a hard time scoring to finish the season. Scoring just 14,14, and 10 points in the three game losing streak to finish the season.
