DICKINSON, N.D. - The Montana Western Bulldogs (2-1) used a strong second-half to upset No. 11 Dickinson State (0-2) 42-30.
Colten McPhee scampered in from six yards out with 2:47 left in the game as the Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered second-half points to beat the perennial North Star Conference powerhouse.
Jon Jund threw for 331 yards on 28-42 passing, including four touchdowns and three interceptions. All four of Junds targets found the endzone.
Trey Mounts led the way with 13 receptions for 102 yards,
Jamison Hermanson and
Reese Neville had 80 yards apiece and
Nate Simkins caught eight passes for 69 yards.
The Bulldogs offense totaled 505 yards and rushed for 178 yards led by Neville's game-high 92. McPhee added 35 yards and two scores, both of which came in the second half.
The started on the wrong foot, with UMW fumbling the opening kick return. UMW regrouped to force DSU to settle for a field goal.
Jund then led the Bulldogs on a 10 play 75 yard drive capped off with a 36 yard scoring strike to Hermanson to take a 7-3 lead.
Three straight scoring drives by the Blue Hawks, aided by UMW turnovers allowed DSU to quickly take a 23-7 lead. The Bulldogs answered right back with Jund finding Neville who raced down the sideline for a 69 yard score and the Bulldogs were back in the game.
Back-to-back fumbles by DSU gave the Bulldogs good field position and Jund found Simkins for a 10 yard score to bring the game to within two at 21-23.
Western then forced a punt, but their fourth turnover of the half allowed DSU to build a 30-21 lead late in the half.
The Bulldogs were able to block a DSU field goal attempt with just over a minute left to keep the deficit at just nine points.
The Bulldogs shut out the Blue Hawks in the second half. UMW's defense stymied DSU offensively. Holding the Blue Hawks to just 78 rushing yards and 2 of 13 on third down and two late interceptions.
The offense took advantage and had three scoring drives that originated around mid-field to comeback and seal the upset win.
The Bulldogs will return home to host MSU-Northern on Sept. 18. Kick-off from Vigilante field is set for 2:07 p.m.
