Bulldog Women’s Basketball Wins Season Opener Over Yotes

DILLON, Mont. – The RV Montana Western women's basketball team (1-0) started their 2023-24 campaign with a win at home over the College of Idaho Yotes (0-1) by a score of 83-65. Tonight's win marks the 14th win in a row over the Yotes, a mark that has stretched back to the 2014-15 season.

"It was a great team win. We all stepped up and executed well in the first half. We need to get better at some of the little details, but overall I was happy with our win and how we played," Head Coach Britt Cooper said after the win. Tonight's win marks Cooper's first win as head coach for the Bulldogs.

How It Happened
The Bulldogs took the lead from the start, claiming a quick 8-0 lead. Led by senior Shainy Mack who scored 11 points in the first quarter alone, the Bulldogs raced to a 30-11 lead to close the first quarter.

Claiming their largest lead of the game at 42-20 just minutes into the second quarter, UMW stalled and allowed the Yotes to rack up nine quick points. The Yotes would go on to outscore the Bulldogs down the stretch and close their margin to 48-35 heading into the half.

Senior Jordan Sweeney and freshman Maddy Moy led the charge in the third quarter, combining for 12 points, four rebounds and a steal. Despite the push, the Bulldogs were narrowly outscored 19-17 in the frame.

Up 65-54, junior Payton Hagy knocked down a three to start the fourth quarter. Despite the quick splash from three, the Yotes capitalized on two trips to the charity stripe and brought the game within ten and their closest margin since the first five minutes of the game. Junior Joelnell Momberg flipped the bill by grabbing a rebound and taking it to the hoop. The Bulldogs would go on to outscore the Yotes 15-7 down the stretch to finish out the game.
