DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball team (5-3) defeated Briercrest College (Caronport SK) this evening 79-53 in a home matchup.
After a slow start that saw the two teams score just 24 points combined in the first quarter, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on 32 turnovers from Briercrest and outscore the Clippers 44-24 in the second half.
"We had a slow first half and struggled from the three, but our defensive intensity gave us the push we needed in the second half to pull away," Head Coach
Britt Cooper said.
How It Happened
The two teams were slow to start, with the Bulldogs scoring just two points in the first five minutes of the game. Despite the slow start, UMW ended the quarter on a 6-0 run that carried them into the second frame.
Up 15-9, the Bulldog women continued to gain their stride, but struggled to overcome the impressive rebounding performance from the Clippers. Briercrest racked up 32 boards in the half and the Bulldogs held a narrow 35-29 lead at the half.
Cutting the lead to just two with 8:27 left in the third,
Maddy Moy laid it in for two and
Jordan Sweeney drained a three to spark a Bulldog run.
UMW would take a 59-44 lead into the final frame after
Shainy Mack drained a three with just five seconds left in the quarter.
Mack hit her fourth three of the contest with eight minutes remaining and the Red and Black continued to run away with the game. Briercrest would hit just two shots from the field in the fourth as UMW finished up the game up 79-53.

- UMW combined for 21 team steals and forced the Clippers to turn the ball over 32 times tonight.
- Briercrest was impressive on the boards, racking up 49 rebounds compared to 33 from Montana Western.
- Sweeney led the Bulldogs with 30 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
- Mack followed with 18 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals.
- Joelnell Momberg led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds and added another four assists.
