Bulldogs Close Out 2023 With 80-60 Win Over Trojans

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball team (8-5) capped out the 2023 year with a victory over the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology by a score of 80-60.

The Bulldogs hit 47.4 percent from the field and picked up 34 points in the paint.

How It Happened
After a well-matched first quarter saw SAIT get out to a 17-15 lead, UMW's Joelnell Momberg hit a jumper and capitalized on a trip to the free throw line to get back on top for a 19-17 lead.

Shainy Mack and Momberg combined for 16 points across the second frame as they led UMW to a 40-29 lead at the half break.

The Bulldog women used momentum gained in the second quarter and pushed out to their largest lead of the game following a big run that was capped by a pair of free throws from Keke Davis. UMW outscored the Trojans 25-15 across the third quarter and hit 50 percent from the field.

Scoring slowed in the fourth, but Isabella Lund and Mack each hit a three in the final minutes of the game as UMW finished up on top by a final score of 80-60.

Notables
  • As a team, the Bulldogs shot over 50 percent in three of the four quarters of today's game.
  • Today's win over the Trojans marks the second win over the team in the past two seasons.
  • UMW's Mack was hot from the field, scoring 22 points and hitting three triples in the game.
  • Two other Bulldogs also hit double-digits in the game with Momberg hitting for 18 points and Jordan Sweeney totaling 10 points. Sweeney was also a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Up Next
Montana Western will take a break and return to action with the opening of Frontier Conference action beginning on Jan. 6. The Bulldogs will take on MSU-Northern at 2 p.m. in Dillon.
