UMW Women’s Basketball Defeats #15 Southern Oregon for First Win of Sullivan Era

BUTTE, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball program earned the 70-55 victory over #15 Southern Oregon Saturday evening in its 2025-26 season opener. The win marks the first collegiate victory for first-year head coach Ryan Sullivan.
 
"Awesome to start the season with a win," Sullivan said. "We didn't play close to our best and still got one. I'm excited to see how much we can grow in the next couple of weeks, but details will be an emphasis for us. It will be awesome to watch the tape and fix some things. I am super proud of how the girls competed and how hard they play!"
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
Western shot 50.0 percent (27-54) from the floor, 54.7 percent (12-22) from beyond the arc, and 40.0 percent (4-10) from the foul line in the contest.
 
The Bulldogs held the statistical advantage in rebounds (45-34), assists (17-4), and blocks (3-1) while the Raiders won the battle in steals (16-5)
 
UMW also outearned SOU in points in the paint (28-26), second-chance points (8-7), and bench points (24-15). Southern Oregon bested the Bulldogs in points off turnovers (24-6) and fast break points (8-6).
 
NOTABLES
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures.
 
Every player who saw the court recorded at least one assist.
 
The UMW defense held SOU under 30.0 percent in both field-goal percentage (28.4) and three-point percentage (18.8).
 
Six Bulldogs shot 50.0 percent or better from the floor.
 
LEADERBOARD
Bailee Sayler led the game with 19 points on 66.7 percent shooting (6-9). All six field goals came from downtown (6-7, 85.7 percent). She also added six rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
 
Isabella Lund (12), Ava Bellach (12), and Maile Wilcox (10) also posted double-digit scoring efforts for the Bulldogs.
 
Keke Davis and Kyle Pancost shared the team-high in rebounds with seven apiece. Lund and Wilcox each dished out three assists to lead all players. Wilcox also led the Western with two steals.
 
Sayler, Pancost, and Bellach each swatted one block.
 
GAME SUMMARY
It was back-and-forth between the two sides at the start, but the Bulldogs took the lead 9-8 halfway through the first quarter and never trailed again. They led by 12, 20-8, at the end of the period.
 
UMW increased their lead to as many as 20 in the second quarter and led 35-16 at the break.
 
Western shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field, 50.0 percent (6-12) from three, and 50.0 percent (1-2) from the foul line in the first half.
 
The Raiders managed to cut the lead to nine in the third, but by the end of the period the Bulldogs were back up by 20, 56-36.
 
The Red and Black led by as many as 22 in the final frame and cruised to the 15-point victory.
 
THE OPPOSITION  
The Raiders shot 28.4 percent (21-74) from the floor, 18.8 percent (6-32) from deep, and 70.0 percent (7-10) from the charity stripe in the game. Sage Winslow led the team with 14 points, followed by Bridgette McIntyre (12) and Keeley Wright (10). Eliza DiGiulio pulled down a game-high eight boards and Winslow snagged a game-best five steals. Millie Day earned SOU's lone block of the game and four different players earned one assist apiece.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow (11/2) when they welcome (RV) College of Idaho for their 2025-26 home opener. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. MT.
