DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball program 6-5, 4-3 FC) rolled over Mayville State (1-9, 0-6 FC) 70-46 Sunday afternoon.
Western led by nearly 20 after the first 10 minutes, and the Comets never got closer than 16 over the final three periods.
"It was great to get two home wins this weekend," head coach
Ryan Sullivan said. "Any time you can do that in our conference is huge."
STAT BREAKDOWN
UMW shot 35.4 percent (28-79) from the floor, 23.7 percent (9-38) from deep, and 71.4 percent (5-7) from the charity stripe.
Western recorded 53 boards, 19 assists, 15 steals, and three blocks.
Western put up 38 points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, 19 second-chance points, and 33 points off the bench.
LEADERBOARD
Bailee Sayler led the game with 19 points, followed by Isabella Lune (13) and
Ava Bellach (11).
Keke Davis pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds.
Isabella Lund dished out a team-best five assists and stole the ball a team-high four times.
Bailee Sayler matched her season-high with three blocks.
NOTABLES
The Bulldogs held their opponent under 30.0 percent from both the field and from three for the second-straight game.
Western tallied over 50 rebounds for the first time this season.
Sayler shot 50.0 percent from the floor (6-12) and from beyond the arc (4-8).
Davis posted double-digit rebounds for the second time this year.
GAME SUMMARY
The game was close through the first four minutes of play, and then Western turned up the heat on both ends of the floor. The Bulldogs held Mayville to just four points for the rest of the quarter while opening up a 19-point gap for themselves offensively.
The Comets shot better in the second frame, but it did little for them and the UMW led by 22, 42-20, after 20 minutes
The Bulldogs shot 44.7 percent (17-38) from the floor 25.0 percent (4-16) from three, and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the foul line over the first two periods.
MSU got within 16 in the third before Western pulled away by 22 once again.
UMW kept it's foot on the gas in the fourth, leading by as many as 30 before cruising to the 24 point win.
THE OPPOSITION
Mayville State shot 25.4 percent (15-59) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-18) from three, and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the foul line. The Comets recorded 42 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and 11 steals. Bella Kanz led the team with 12 points, followed by Hannah Stark with 11. Laela Jensen and Taylor Hill shared the team-high in rebounds with nine apiece. Whitney Whelk handed out a team-best two assists while Hill swatted two blocks. Hill also led the game with five steals.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs are back in action Thursday (12/18) when they play host to Briercrest. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. MT.
