Zach McCarthy

Zach McCarthy joined the University of Montana Western Athletic Training staff in the fall of 2017. He is a graduate of the University of Montana graduate program in Athletic Training. In his four years at Montana Western, McCarthy has earned the reputation of being excellent in the concept of “prehabilitation.” This concept maximizes athletic efficiency by minimizing injuries through a preventative approach. Zach is passionate about preventing injuries in athletics, thus enhancing the overall student-athlete experience.

His passion of the health and safety of our student-athletes was integral in the 2017-18 Women’s Basketball Fab Four team and critical for the 2018-19 Women’s Basketball National Championship Team. His hard work and service to that team, allowed them to overcome major obstacles that would have sidelined most other teams!

Prior to his time at UMW, most of Zach’s clinical experiences were primarily completed at the University of Montana in Missoula. Additionally, he was part of the healthcare team to the Missoula Junior Bruins and the Hellgate Knights.

In addition to his expertise as an injury prevention specialist, he recently earned advanced certification in Blood Flow Restriction. This therapeutic application is “cutting edge” and allows the healthcare Zach provides to be amongst the finest for any student-athlete in the Northwest. Zach also possesses advanced skills in scraping and cupping. Zach played a key role in the successful management of COVID-19 at UMW. His energy, passion, and proactive approach was critical for the success of our department in early identification and minimization of the spread of this condition. His efforts were often done behind the scenes and unrecognized by most people in the department.

A native of Meridian, Idaho, McCarthy enjoys golfing, fly fishing, and snowboarding.
