Men's Basketball Heads North to Open 2019 Conference Play

The University of Montana Western Bulldogs Men's basketball team will make the road trip north to open the 2019 portion of the Frontier Conference schedule. The Bulldogs will face MSU-Northern on the High-Line and No. 23 University of Providence in Great Falls, Mont. on January fourth and fifth. 

The Bulldogs So Far
  • The Bulldogs are 6-7 overall and 0-2 in Frontier Conference play. 
  • The Bulldogs split two games at the Green and Gold Classic in Billings, Mont. last weekend. Falling to Dickinson State 78-67, and thumping The King's University 84-34. 
  • In the win against King's University, every player scored with four scoring in double-figures, led by Derrek Durocher and Tanner Haverfield's 14 points apiece.
  • The Bulldogs forced 31 King's University turnovers.

Who to Watch
  • Senior guard Kooper Kidgell is eighth in the conference averaging 16 points a game. He has scored in double-figures in every game this season. Kidgell is averaging a career-high 4.2 rebounds a game.
  • Junior guard Cedric Boone is averaging 12.6 points a game and has dished out 39 assists. 
  • Freshman guard Tanner Haverfield has worked his way into the starting lineup and leads the team in free-throw percentage, shooting 72.4 percent from the line. 
  • Senior guard Troy Scott is averaging a career-high 7.7 points a game, and leads the team in total rebounds (72) and rebounds per game (5.5). 

Scouting the Opponents
  • Montana Sate University-Northern is 8-6 and 0-2 in Frontier play. They have four players who average scoring in double-figures, led by Mascio McCadney's 14.8 points per game. 
  • The Lights are first int he nation in defensive rebounds a game (28.4). Adam Huse is third in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (6.0).
  • The No. 23 University of Providence Argos are 10-3 and 1-1 in the conference. They are sixth in the nation in 3-point shots made per game (11.1) and average 95 points a game. 
  • Brandon Cotton leads the Argos with 18.8 points a game and is third in the nation in 3-point percentage (55.2). 
  • The Argos Jalen Shepard averages 17. 2 points a game, and is first in the nation in total steals (38) and steals per game (2.9).
