CALDWELL, Idaho - The Montana Western Bulldogs (5-3, 4-3) fell to the College of Idaho (5-2, 5-2) 48-42 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Simplot Stadium.
Jon Jund led the Bulldogs on a 10 play 80 yard drive in the final two minutes to tie the game at 35. Western scored first in overtime on a
Reese Neville 1 yard rush, his second score of the day. But the Bulldog defense was unable to hold the Yotes as they scored to force a second overtime period. Western elected to take the ball first in the second OT and missed their field goal attempt. Setting up C of I with a chance to walk off with the win. Allamar Alexander scored his second touchdown of the day to give the Yotes the win and push C of I into second place in the conference.
The first half was all offense. Neither team punted as they each had three long scoring drives to leave the game tied at 21 at the half.
Jund found
Trey Mounts twice for two short touchdown passes in the first half and he also ran one in from a yard out.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second half, going 69 yards in eight plays to take a 28-21 lead. UMW forced a CI punt but couldn't capitalize on the defensive stop going three and out. The Yotes got a good return on the Bulldog punt and didn't waste any time, scoring on their first play from 40 yards out to tie the game back up at 28.
After CI scored to take the lead, UMW defense stood tall and forced the Yotes to punt with just 2:21 remaining.
The Bulldogs then drove the length of the field, highlights by a 56 yard pass from Jund to
Nate Simkins that put the ball at the CI one yard line, setting up Neville's rush to send the game into overtime.
Jund finished 23-30 for 276 yards and two scores. He added 40 yards on the ground.
The Bulldogs will head north to face MSU-Northern on Oct. 30. Kickoff from Tilleman Field is set for 1 p.m.
Notes
- The Bulldogs were 4-9 on third down while CI was 9-12
- Neither team had a turnover.
- Nate Simkins had 10 catches for 174 yards. He remains at 29 career touchdowns, just one shy of tying the school record.
