Jund, Defense Lead Bulldogs Past Southern Oregon 38-7

DILLON, Mont. - The 24th ranked Montana Western Bulldogs (5-2, 4-2) defeated the Southern Oregon Raiders (3-3, 3-3) 38-7 Saturday afternoon in Dillon.

The Raiders scored on their opening drive and after that it was all Montana Western as the Bulldogs scored 38 unanswered points.

Trailing 7-0 and having a couple of drives stall, The Bulldogs needed a spark. The Bulldog defense forced a three and out and Trey Mounts returned the ensuing punt 31 yards. A late hit out-of-bounds tacked 15 more yards and Western was in business at the 16 yard line. Three plays later and Colten McPhee  plowed into the end zone from a yard out to tie the game. The defense was just getting started, as they forced four more SOU punts and Jund led the Bulldogs on two more scoring drive to build a 21-7 halftime lead.

Jund finished 16-28 for 164 yards and two scores while also getting the job done with his feet running the ball 16 times for 101 yards and a 15 yard score late in the game to put the finishing touches on an impressive win.

In the second half, the Bulldogs had great field position thanks to the defense who forced eight SOU punts, 14 pass break ups, eight tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions as they had their way with SOU all game long.
allowing the Bulldogs to start six of their seven drives started in plus territory. The only drive that didn't, started on their own 45.

Latrell McCutcheon, three tackles and five passes defended, and Braden Swank, seven tackles and four pass break-ups, led the Western ball hawking secondary who broke up 14 SOU passes and had two interceptions.

Tanner Harrell and Reese Artz and Bryer Monson were in the back field all game forcing SOU's Matt Struck out of the pocket and into bad decisions. Struck finished a pedestrian 15 of 42 for 189 yards and an interception and negative seven yards rushing.

The Bulldogs are off next week and return to action Oct. 23 at The College of Idaho. Kickoff from Simplot Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
