CALDWELL, Idaho—The Montana Western Bulldogs (5-1) swept the weekend in Caldwell with a close game against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon (EOU) (2-4), 73-70.
The two teams closely traded points for the first two quarters. The Bulldogs held a six-point lead at the half, but a 20-point third quarter for the Mountaineers left the Bulldogs down 47 to 52 at the end of the third.
Taylor Stricklin, an Eastern Oregon guard, caused trouble for the Bulldogs, especially from the arc.
Jenni Weber answered with a handful of crucial shots from arc and
Lilly Gopher established herself in the paint. With a one-point lead and 15 seconds left on the clock, the Mountaineers fouled
Sydney Sheridan and sent her to the free-throw line. Sheridan dropped both foul shots, giving the Bulldogs a three-point edge. With the Mountaineers back in control of the ball, Stricklin bounced a 3-point attempt off the back iron. EOU grabbed the offensive rebound with five seconds left. Brandy Smith (EOU) attempted a final 3-point shot, but Sheridan flew at her, blocking the ball.
"Great weekend for our team," coach
Lindsay Woolley said. "They battled their tails off and showed tremendous resiliency tonight. To be able to battle back from multiple deficits against a great program like EOU shows a lot of heart!"
Lilly Gopher had 17 points, seven rebounds, and two assists,
Jenni Weber also tallied 17 points, and added seven rebounds.
Shainy Mack added seven assists to the scoreboard.
Taylor Stricklin had 26 points, shooting eight of 16 from the arc.
The Bulldogs play two games next weekend in Grand Junction, Colo. at the Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic.
