Bulldogs Rally Past Northern for Five Set Win

Score: Montana Western 3 – Montana State University-Northern 2 (25-21, 11-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-3)
Record: UMW (3-9), MSUN (1-11)
Location: Straugh Gymnasium - Dillon, Mont. 

The Bulldogs stormed back from a  2-1 deficit and used a dominate fifth set to defeat MSU-Northern in five sets to sweep the weekend series. The Bulldogs won a tight first set 25-21, using an 8-1 run midway thought the set to build some separation and survived a late push to take the first set. The Skylights regrouped and came out in the second set firing on all cylinders. They very quickly took a 15-2 lead and coasted to a 25-11 impressive win to tie the match. The buzzsaw that was the Skylights, didn't slow down, as they built a 19-11 lead in the third. The Bulldogs clawed back to trail by a point at 23-22, but the Skylights were able to survive the rally to take a two sets to one lead. The Bulldogs would not go away quietly, and used a couple of rallies to take a 17-12 lead. MSUN tied the set up at 19 before three kills by Morgan Stenger gave UMW the set win to send the match into the deciding set. The Bulldogs dominated the fifth set, taking a 12-2 lead in a flash, taking the set 15-3 in impressive fashion. 

Top Performers

  • Abby Morgan had 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .278. She also had nine total blocks.
  • Cady Siemion had 15 kills and 30 digs. 
  • Abbey Schwager had 50 assists and nine digs.
  • Tannah Sellars had 31 digs. 
  • Rylee Burmester had 17 kills and 14 digs for MSU-Northern
  • Emily Feller had 45 assists and 15 digs for the Skylights.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will travel to Helena, Mont. for a pair of matches next weekend against Carroll College. First-Serve from the P.E. Center is set for 7 p.m. on March 12 and 1 p.m. on March 13.
