Bulldog Women Lose in Top 25 Matchup to Carroll College 72-61

HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Western Women's Basketball team fell to No. 9 ranked Carroll College this evening by a final score of 72-61. The Bulldogs move to 5-2 on the season and will be seeking to get back on track against Montana Tech this upcoming Saturday.

How it Happened
The Bulldogs opened the game playing tight with the Fighting Saints, holding an 11-7 lead in the first four minutes. The Bulldogs then went cold for much of the remainder of the first quarter as Carroll rode behind a 13-4 scoring run. Despite the difficult stretch that put Carroll up 11 points with five minutes left in the half, the Bulldogs got back within seven points at the half. Jordan Sweeney led the Bulldogs at the half with 10 points and three rebounds. Brynley Fitzgerald also added six points and five rebounds.

The third quarter saw the Bulldogs bring it within three points behind a three-point shot from the hands of Fitzgerald; however, the Saints answered with an 8-2 run that brought the score to 47-38 with Carroll on top. Carroll stretched their lead to 58-41 by the end of the third quarter. Though down 17 to start the fourth, Shainy Mack and Joelnell Momberg hit back-to-back three-point shots to give the Bulldogs the kick start they needed to fight their way back into the game. Three straight made free throws with 3:44 left in the game brought the Bulldogs within one point at 62-61. Despite the run, the Fighting Saints would close the game on a 10-0 run that gave them the win 72-61.

Notables
  • The Bulldogs were 21-57 from the field and shot just 8-24 from the three-point line.
  • The Fighting Saints out-rebounded the Bulldogs 39 to just 26. The Bulldogs on average pick up 37.7 rebounds per game, 11.7 more than they had this evening.
  • Mack led the Bulldogs tonight with 15 points, two rebounds, and an assist.
  • Fitzgerald followed with 14 points and seven rebounds. She also had two assists, two steals, and was 4-4 from the free throw line.
