Royals Top Bulldogs Despite Posting Team Season Scoring High

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Bulldog Men's Basketball team lost to (RV) Hope International University this afternoon by a score of 90-78 at the Cactus Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

How it Happened
The Royals scored the first bucket of the game, but the Bulldogs took over quickly after hitting four three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game. Up 18-13, the Bulldogs forced the Royals to call a timeout in hopes of breaking the Bulldog momentum. After a four-minute stretch of holding the Royals from scoring, HIU was able to break the ice with a layup. The Bulldogs answered by going on a 10-4 run that featured a three-pointer from Ky Kouba. The Royals would hold the Bulldogs scoreless for a four-minute stretch while the HIU brought the game back within two. With 4:03 left in the half, Brenton Woods made a layup to give the Bulldogs the lead at 28-23. The lead was short lived as the Royals went on a 14-0 run to take the lead at 37-28. Just before the buzzer, Jok Jok drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws from the charity stripe to cut the Royal lead down to seven at the half.

The Royals held all of the momentum heading into the start of the second half, riding behind a five-minute run of outscoring the Bulldogs 15-7. A Bulldog timeout was not enough to stop the Royals as they continued to put the pressure on. Down 20, freshman Deontavius Smith quickly drove down the court and made an and one to begin to chip away at the lead. The Bulldogs would go on to outscore the Royals in the final three minutes 18-8, but it was not enough in the end. The Bulldogs would fall by a score of 90-78.
