CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Bulldog Women's Basketball team got off to a hot start in the Cactus Classic this afternoon by vanquishing the No. 14 ranked Vanguard University (Calif.) Lions by a score of 71-60.
"It was a great team effort. Joelnell gave us a huge burst offensively in the first half and I think that helped us settle in offensively. Then in the second half, I though Kyla and Isabella made some huge plays to help push the margin. Two more big ones in the next couple of days." Head Coach
Lindsay Woolley said after the win.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs trailed the Lions 12-8 heading into the second quarter following a less than impressive performance. The Bulldogs were just 2-12 from the field and shot a mere 16.7 percent as a team. Despite the lackluster first quarter, the Bulldogs kicked it into gear behind sophomore
Joelnell Momberg. In a span of five minutes, Momberg hit three shots from the arc and snagged a pair of layups to post 13 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs would go into the half tied with the Lions at 30 after
Jordan Sweeney hit a three-pointer with just 30 seconds on the clock.
Momberg was the first to strike coming out of the half, giving the Bulldogs a 32-30 lead two minutes into the third. With 1:48 left in the quarter,
Kyla Momberg nailed a layup giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game thus far. A 7-0 run from the Lions that started at the end of the third quarter and stretched into the start of the fourth cut UMW's lead down to just two with 9:09 remaining in the game.
Isabella Lund stepped up to the plate and answered by scoring seven points in a row on the way to a Bulldog 15-0 scoring run.
Shainy Mack stretched the Montana Western lead to a game-high of 18 points with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Vanguard was unable to respond as the Bulldogs finished up on top 71-60.
