Bulldogs Score Season Team High 89 Points in Loss to Providence

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Montana Western Men's Basketball team lost to the University of Providence Argos this afternoon by a score of 95-89. The Bulldogs are now 8-13 on the season and 3-5 in Frontier Conference play.

How It Happened
Four straight scoring efforts from the Argos put Providence out front 15-9 early in the first half. Brenton Woods made a quick layup to bring the Bulldogs back within four at 15-11 with 14 minutes to play.

Jaden Graham connected from the free throw line to bring the Bulldogs within three, but the Argos gained some confidence and used a 10-2 run to take an 11-point advantage.

Grayson Nelson came up big for the Bulldogs at the four-minute mark as he led the Bulldogs in scoring five straight points to cut the Argo lead down to six. The Argos answered with a three-point shot and went on to take a 44-32 lead at the half.

Back to back triples from Michael Haverfield and Ky Kouba brought the Bulldogs back from a 19-point deficit four minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs continued, scoring another seven unanswered points to bring UMW back within striking distance.

The Argos would stop the Bulldog drive and go on to stretch their lead to 18-points on UMW with 7:58 remaining in the game.

Jaden Graham and Jamal Stephenson sparked a late rally after they knocked a pair of threes down to bring the score to 78-65 Argos with over four minutes to play. Clawing their way back, UMW cut the Argo lead down to as little as three points before falling to the Argos 95-89 in the final minutes.

Notables
  • The Bulldogs rallied in the second half behind 10 three-pointers and outscored the Argos 57-51 down the stretch.
  • The Bulldogs shot 50.8 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from the arc, in comparison to the Argos who were 51.5 percent from the field and shot 37.9 percent from the three-point line.
  • The Argos were able to convert a season high 19 Bulldog turnovers into 22 points.
  • Five Bulldogs reached double digits, including Jamal Stephenson who led the Bulldogs with 19 points, two rebounds, and a steal.
  • Brenton Woods and Jaden Graham each followed with 14 apiece. Woods added six assists and Graham added five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
  • Ky Kouba totaled nine points and led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
Up Next
The Bulldogs are back on the road next week with a matchup in Havre, Mont. against the MSU-Northern Lights, followed by a trip to Billings to take on the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears. First matchup is set for Thursday, January 26 at 7PM MST.
