Bulldogs Fall In Conference Tournament Final Game

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The No. 15 ranked Montana Western Women's Basketball team fell to the No. 11 Carroll College Saints by a final score of 53-47. The Bulldogs move to 25-5 on the season and will await the NAIA Selection Show for an at-large bid into the tournament.

How It Happened
Carroll got off to a quick six-point lead over the Bulldogs. Despite the deficit, the Bulldogs outscored the Saints down the stretch and trailed just one point at the end of the first.

The Bulldogs utilized the momentum gained and carried it into the second, taking their first lead of the game with a jump shot from Jordan Sweeney.

An 11-2 scoring run put the Bulldogs on top 28-20 with 3:46 left in the half. Despite the lead, Carroll fought their way back and stole momentum quickly and forced back-to-back turnovers on the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs would hang on to a 28-26 lead heading into the half, led by Brynley Fitzgerald with 12 points.

Carroll's Kamden Hilborn and Jamie Pickens were the first to strike in the second half, claiming the lead once again.

Emily Cooley hit a free throw to tie the game back up at 31 with over five minutes remaining in the third. The Bulldogs were then able to gain a narrow 38-37 lead heading into the final quarter of the matchup.

Montana Western shot 25 percent in the final quarter of the game as Carroll outscored the Bulldogs 16-9 to take the win 53-47.

Notables
  • The Bulldogs fell for the fourth time this season to the Saints, despite their closest scoring margin this season.
  • The Saints extended their streak to 12 straight wins over the Bulldogs.
  • Montana Western forced the Saints to turn the ball over 18 times in the matchup, capitalizing on them with 10 points.
  • The Saints shut the Bulldogs down at the three-point line as UMW was just 2-16 from the arc, their worst three-point percentage this season with a 12.5 percent.
  • Brynley Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 14 points. She also added a steal and a rebound.
  • Jordan Sweeney and Emily Cooley added nine points in the matchup. Sweeney also totaled five rebounds.

The Bulldogs finish up the regular season 25-5 and will await the NAIA Selection Show that is scheduled for this Thursday, March 2 at 5PM MST for an at-large bid to the tournament.
