DILLON, Mont. – Montana Western women's basketball (1-3) faltered to the no. 14 Mayville State Comets in a tight contest that led up to the final minutes of the game on Friday evening. The Comets pulled through in the final minutes to take the game by a final score of 80-76.
Trinidie Nichols had an outstanding night, going 7-10 from the field and a perfect five for five from the charity stripe to lead the Bulldogs with 24 points.
Keke Davis provided a push needed on the boards, racking up 12 rebounds with three on the offensive side of the ball.
How It Happened
Joelnell Momberg got the scoring done first for the Bulldogs in the first frame. Knocking down 11 points off of three triples in her six minutes on the court. A balanced effort from Mayville State kept the two teams even at 20-apiece at the end of the first quarter.
A brief 4-0 run came off a layup from both Momberg and Nichols to open scoring for the Bulldogs in the second. They would stretch their lead to seven after Nichols banged a three shortly after. The Bulldogs would hit a rough patch, allowing Mayville State to go on a 15-0 run midway through the quarter. A layup from
Kyla Momberg paired with another three from Nichols helped get Western back within two at the break.
Mayville State flipped a switch late in the third, jumping out to a 10-point lead with a minute left to play in the quarter. Nichols drained a pair from the charity stripe and
Isabella Lund dropped a triple to close within five heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite narrowly outscoring the Comets 23-22 in the final quarter of the game, it was too little too late as the Comets were able to hang on to take the victory at 80-76.
