Bulldog Women Win Home Opener in Revenge Win Over Dickinson State

DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball team (1-1) opened their home slate with a payback win over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks (3-3) for their home opener.

The Bulldogs combined for an impressive 21 steals in the game, feeding 33 points off of turnovers in the 76-50 win.

"Our defense won us a game tonight. We were able to get quality minutes from all ten of our players," Head Coach Britt Cooper said.

How It Happened
UMW got off to a hot start in the first quarter, taking a 15-6 lead after seeing five Bulldogs contribute to the action. The defense also held DSU to a mere six points and a one for six shooting performance from the field.

UMW began the second quarter on a 7-1 scoring run, with Kyla Momberg capping the run with a layup in the paint. A free throw broke the run, but it was Momberg who added to the scoring gap after she hit a three-pointer to put Western up 17 points. The Bulldogs would extend their lead by as much as 23 points in the quarter before taking a 39-18 lead into the half.

The third quarter proved to be a competitive spurt, with the Blue Hawks maintaining a narrow three-point scoring edge in the frame.

Up 56-38 heading into the fourth, the Bulldog defense continued to hold strong, holding DSU once again to 12 points. Western went on to close out the game up 76-50.

  • As a team, the Bulldogs combined for 33 points off of turnovers after picking up a combined 21 steals.
  • UMW's bench totaled 31 points in the game, outscoring DSU's bench by 25 points.
  • Joelnell Momberg led the Bulldogs in scoring, totaling 12 points after hitting 4-10 from the field.
  • Keke Davis led the Bulldogs with an impressive six steals while also scoring nine points in the game.
  • Maddy Moy led with six rebounds. She also added eight points to the tally.

Montana Western will return to the Straugh tomorrow night at 6 p.m. to take on the visiting Southeastern University (Fla.). SEU enters the matchup at 4-1 after suffering their first loss of the season to Montana Tech this evening.
