Moy and Hagy Lead Bulldog Women to Victory

DILLON, Mont. – The Montana Western women's basketball team (6-9) upset No. 5 University of Providence (9-5) this afternoon, 73-67, earning their first Frontier Conference win of the season.

"Our team embraced the challenge today and ran with it," said Head Coach Britt Cooper. "Our ladies have a ton of fight, and we were able to capitalize on it today."

Payton Hagy and Maddy Moy each scored a career-high 19 points in the victory.

How it Happened

Hagy knocked down two three-point baskets as the Bulldogs raced out to an 11-3 lead early in the quarter. Providence stormed back to cut UMW's lead to two by the end of the first quarter.

Starting the second quarter, the Bulldogs forced three Providence turnovers, and Moy scored nine points to propel UMW to a 33-28 halftime lead.

Kenzi Pedersen got the Bulldogs rolling in the third quarter, scoring three points to open the period. However, an 11-2 scoring run by the Argos tied the game heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with the Argos taking a five-point lead in the final minutes. A basket by Moy cut the lead to two, and after two missed free throws by Providence, an Isabella Lund layup brought the Bulldogs within one.

UMW fouled Providence with nine seconds remaining, and the Argos made both free throws to extend their lead to three. After a Bulldog timeout, Hagy drained a three-point basket with three seconds left to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, it was all Bulldogs. Pedersen and Moy scored back-to-back baskets to give UMW a four-point lead. Western outscored the Argos 12-6 in the extra period, securing the victory.
