Bulldog MBB Handles Mayville State 85-72 Saturday

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The UMW men's basketball program (7-1, 2-0 FC) defeated Mayville State (5-2, 1-2 FC) 85-72 Saturday evening. The Bulldogs held the Comets to 22 points fewer than their 2025-26 season average.

"Great way to start off conference and get two wins on the road," head coach Patrick Jensen said. "We had a lot of guys really step up this weekend and make some big contributions."
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
Western shot 46.4 percent (32-69) from the field, 40.0 percent (10-25) from distance, and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the line in the contest.
 
UMW registered 43 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals, and three blocks.
 
The Bulldogs held the statistical advantage in nearly every category, including rebounds (43-33), assists (10-8), steals (10-7). They also led in points off turnovers (18-9) and second-chance points (16-9).
 
Mayville State won the battle in blocks (4-3), as well as points in the paint (24-22) and bench points (30-20).
 
NOTABLES
Kyle Gruhler posted his third 30-point game of the season.
 
Billy Carlson grabbed a career-high nine boards.
 
Season-best 10 steals.
 
Second straight contest with 10 or more team assists.
 
LEADERBOARD
Gruhler put up a game-high 32 points, with Emanuel Steward (16), Mark Huber (12), and Carlson (11) also in double figures.
 
Carlson tied for the game-best with nine rebounds, followed by Joshua Whiteside (eight) and Jacob Ankeny (seven).
 
Steward led all players with three assists and swiped a game-high tying three steals.
 
Whiteside, Huber, and David Young each earned a block in the game.  
 
GAME SUMMARY
The first half was a back-and-forth ball game, with the Bulldogs' biggest lead being six and the Comets' just two. Western held a slim advantage for much of the half and were up four, 41-37, at the break.
                                                                                                          
UMW Shot 44.4 percent (16-36) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-16) from deep, and 33.3 percent (2-6) from the line in the first half. Gruhler (15) and Steward (14) were both in double-figures after one period while Carlson had six boards.
 
The hosts briefly went up by three at the start of the second half, but the Bulldogs took over from there. They stretched their lead to as many as 19 with under five minutes left in the game, and despite their best efforts, the Comets could not close the gap.
 
THE OTHER GUYS
The Comets shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the field, 30.0 percent (6-20) from three, and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the charity stripe. Malik Siggers and Christian Bowen-Webb each put up 15 points to lead the team. Darius Brant (11), Ollie Fell (11), and Amon Moore (10) round out the top five scorers. Brant earned a game-high tying nine rebounds. Isaiah Smith and Devin Griffin each recorded two assists. Siggers and Bowen-Webb also paced MSU with three steals apiece. Bowen-Webb, Brant, Smith, and Fell each earned a block.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Western takes the court again Friday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Butte, Mont., to take on rival Montana Tech. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. MT.
