Western WBB Never Trails in 81-60 Win at Mayville State

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Montana Western women's basketball program (4-2, 2-0 FC), earned the wire-to-wire victory over Mayville State (1-6, 0-3 FC) 81-60 Saturday evening. The hosts never got closer than six in the second half.
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
UMW shot 44.8 percent (26-58) from the floor, 33.3 percent (11-33) from three-point range, and 78.3 percent (18-23) from the foul line in the contest.
 
The Red and Black recorded 30 rebounds, 22 assists, 18 steals, and four blocks.
 
The Bulldogs held the statistical advantage in nearly every category, including assists (22-12), steals (18-7), and blocks (4-2). They also outperformed Mayville State in points in the paint (24-12), points off turnovers (23-20), second-chance points (12-7), and bench points (32-13).
 
The Comets won the battle in rebounds, 35-30.
 
NOTABLES
Gio Horner dropped a season-high 18 points on 50.0 percent (6-12) shooting, including 15 points from downtown.
 
Team season-highs in points, assists, steals, and blocks.
 
Second game with 10 or more made threes on the campaign.
 
LEADERBOARD
Horner led the game in scoring (18) while Bailee Sayler was also in double-figures with 11.
 
Keke Davis pulled down a team-high six boards, followed by Brooke Deyak and Kyle Pancost with five apiece.
 
Maile Wilcox and Isabella Lund shared the game-high with five assists each.
 
Sayler swatted a game-best three blocks.
 
Davis, Lund, Sayler, and Wilcox all tied for the game-high in steals, swiping three apiece.
 
GAME SUMMARY
Western jumped out to a 12-point lead early in the opening frame before stretching it to as many as 17 late in the first. The Bulldogs were up 31-18 at the break.
 
The hosts didn't get closer than 10 in the second, with UMW leading by 14, 44-30, as the teams headed into halftime.
The Bulldogs shot 40.0 percent (14-35) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-23) from beyond the arc, and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the line in the first half.
 
The Comets clawed back within six points late in the third quarter, but Western quickly put any doubt to rest and led by 15, 64-59, with one period remaining.
 
UMW stretched its lead to as many as 26 in the final frame and cruised to the 21-point win.
 
THE OPPOSITION 
Mayville State shot 36.5 percent (19-52) from the floor, 32.1 percent (9-28) from three, and 59.1 percent (13-22) from the line. Hannah Stark posted a team-high 15 points, followed by Laela Jensen and Taylor Hill with 10 each. Stark also tallied a game-high eight rebounds. Misti Zempel and Lynae Walker dished out three assists each. Jensen and Hill shared the team-lead in steals with two apiece. Walker and Bella Kanz each recorded a block.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs are back in action next Friday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Butte, Mont., to take on rival Montana Tech. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. MT.
