Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to #7 LC State 75-69 Friday

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Montana Western women's basketball program (2-1) was defeated by #7 LC State (3-0) 75-69 Friday evening in its first game of the Twin Rivers PT Classic.

It was a tightly contested battle between the two sides, with neither team able to lead by more than single digits.

"I thought we had opportunities to win," head coach Ryan Sullivan said. "We got in foul trouble and that cost us a little bit. We had a bunch of girls step up for us and play big minutes so that's really encouraging. LC State is a big, athletic team that puts you in bad spots but I'm really proud of our competitiveness. To come to Lewiston and beat LC you need to play exceptionally well. We needed to win a couple more possessions than we did."

STAT BREAKDOWN
Western shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the field, 25.0 percent (6-24) from deep, and 65.0 percent (13-20) from the foul line in the contest.

The Bulldogs tallied 39 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals, and one block. They posted 34 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, eight second-chance points, and 22 bench points.

NOTABLES
Three players scored in double figures.

Isabella Lund led the team in points, assists, and steals while ranking second in rebounds.

Eight Bulldogs tallied two or more rebounds.

LEADERBOARD
Lund paced the team offensively with 14 points while Kyle Pancost (12) and Ava Bellach (10) also reached double figures.

Bailee Sayler pulled down a team-best eight rebounds while Lund dished out a team-high six assists.

Lund and Pancost shared the team-lead with two steals each and Bellach swatted the lone block of the game for the Bulldogs.

GAME SUMMARY
The tournament hosts opened the game with an 8-0 run, but the Bulldogs didn't shy away from the challenge, clawing their way back to lead by two, 16-14, at the end of the first period.

UMW increased its lead to as many as five early in the second quarter. The Warriors pulled ahead once again by the halftime whistle, taking the 32-29 lead into the locker room.

Western shot 40.0 percent (12-30) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from three, and 28.7 percent (2-7) from the foul line over the first two periods.

LC State maintained a narrow lead throughout the third stanza, with the Bulldogs getting as close as one point. The Warriors led by seven, 58-51, heading into the final 10 minutes.

The hosts led by nine, their biggest lead of the contest, with five minutes remaining, but the Red and Black refused to go quietly. Despite making it a one-possession game on multiple occasions, Western couldn't fully overcome the deficit, and LC State pulled away at the end for the six-point victory.

THE OPPOSITION
The Warriors shot 45.3 percent (24-53) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-23) from distance, and 78.3 percent (18-23) from the charity stripe. They posted 33 rebounds, 14 assists, eight steals, and four blocks. Sitara Byrd led all players with 20 points, followed by Lindsey Wilson (12) and Darian Herring (10). Herring posted a double-double with a game-high 10 boards. Payton Hymas handed out game-bests in assists (eight) and blocks (two). Herring and Byrd shared the team-high in steals with two each.
