Bulldog Football Drops Heartbreaker to SOU, 28-27

DILLON, Mont. – Montana Western football (2-3, 0-1 FC West) fell to Southern Oregon (2-3, 1-0 FC West) 28-27 Saturday afternoon at Bulldog stadium.

"Really proud of how hard we played and the team fought to the end. I wish I had a few calls back in several situations where I could have put us in more successful positions," head coach Ryan Nourse said. "Kudos to SOU, they came to play and were highly motivated and made more plays when needed than we did. We have been in some holes and tough situations here before, the load is heavy right now but we believe in each other and will continue to move forward and improve each week."
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
The Bulldogs registered 368 yards of total offense, including 244 passing yards and 124 rushing yards. They scored three touchdowns and two field goals and 25 first downs.
 
Kaden LaPlaunt threw for 244 yards and one touchdown on 26 completions.
 
Eli Nourse led all players with 145 receiving yards and one touchdown on 13 receptions.
 
Aidan Lammers rushed for two scores while Jakob Humphrey led UMW with 65 rushing yards.
 
The Bulldog defense registered 56 tackles, 4.0 tackles-for-loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in the contest. They also tallied three pass breakups and two QB hurries.
 
Bodie Smith paced the team with seven total tackles while Romeo Simpson tied for the game-high with five solo efforts.
 
Liam Rowe and Manny Variz IV each earned one TFL. Variz also snagged an interception for the Bulldogs.
 
Simpson forced the fumble for Western while Connor Dunlea recovered one.
 
Maclain Burckley went 2-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATs.
 
GAME SUMMARY

The Raiders got on the board first with two touchdowns, one with 2:53 left in the first and the second with 9:42 remaining in the second quarter.
 
Lammers opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with a one-yard rush with under two minutes remaining in the half.
 
Eli Nourse tied the score 14-14 with a three-yard reception from LaPlaunt as time expired in the half.
 
SOU pulled ahead again halfway through the third frame, but Lammer tied it once more (21-21) with his second touchdown of the day with two minutes left in the period.
 
Burckley drained two field goals in the final quarter to give the Bulldogs the 27-21 lead. Unfortunatle, SOU managed another touchdown with under a minute remaining in the game to take the lead 28-27.
 
The Bulldogs had a chance with a 61-yard field goal attempt as time ran out, but it fell just short and the visitors took the win.
 
SOUTHERN OREGON
SOU tallied 507 yards of total offense (322 passing, 185 rushing), four touchdowns, and 23 first downs.
 
Dom Montiel threw for 311 yards and one touchdown on 25 completions.
 
Fresh Ison rushed for a game-high 90 yards and one touchdown while Coen Coloma earned two rushing TDs and 25 yards.
 
Dawson Douglas caught six passes for 69 yards and Caden Simmons put up 55 yards and one TD on three catches.
 
Southern Oregon's defense tallied 62 total tackles, 5.0 TFLs, nine pass breakups and two QB hurries.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs head back on the road next weekend to face off Carroll College (10/10).
