#18 Montana Western Football Falls to #5 Montana Tech 34-7 in Home Opener

DILLON, Mont. – Montana Western football (1-1) were clipped by #5 Montana Tech (3-0) 34-7 Saturday afternoon in Bulldog Stadium.

"Tech has a confident, experienced, and strong team, and they played that way today," head coach Ryan Nourse said. "We weren't able to match that fact with that level of confidence and play today. We have a good group of guys with a lot of talent and I believe the character to see where we are short right now and get to work to build our team up. Although it's a very disappointing outcome it shows us where we are at and where we need to go right now to improve."
 
 STAT BREAKDOWN 
The Bulldogs tallied 287 yards of total offense (220 passing, 67 rushing) and scored one touchdown and had 14 first downs.
 
Kaden LaPlaunt threw for 196 yards (11-21) and one touchdown, including a long of 75 yards. Sam Wulff registered three completions on seven attempts for 24 yards.
 
Eli Nourse had his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, posting 114 yards on five receptions. He scored the lone touchdown of the game for Western on the 75-yard pass from LaPlaunt.
 
Seth Shook (72 yards) and Colton Cornwell (29) caught five and three receptions apiece.
 
Wulff led the Bulldogs with 19 rush yards, followed by Jakob Humphrey (18), Aidan Lammers (16), and Kaden LaPlaunt (14).
 
On the defensive side, Western recorded 64 total tackles, including 38 solo.
 
Tyson Hirrlinger, Connor Dunlea, Bodie Smith, and Canyon Sargent shared the team-lead in total tackles with seven each. Hirrlinger, Dunlea, and Smith each registered five solo efforts.
 
Manuel Variz IV earned one tackle-for-loss for three yards, Romeo Simpson led the team with two pass breakups, and both Sargent and Tyler Schoen recorded a QB hurry.
On special teams Maclain Burckley recorded three punts for 128 yards (42.7 yards per punt) with three inside the 20, one touchback, and a long of 48. He also had two kickoffs for 127 yards (63.5 yards per kick) with one touchback.
 
Cornwell led all returners with 76 yards, including a long of 43 on five returns. Brody Munson posted one return for 32 yards.
 
 GAME SUMMARY 
Montana Tech opened the scoring on a 14-play, 75 yard drive with a four-yard run from Jarrett Wilson.
 
The Orediggers went up 14-0 after a 24-yard Gunnar Peterson touchdown from Wilson.
 
In the second quarter, LaPlaunt and Nourse connected on a 75 yard bomb, bringing the Bulldogs within one score.
 
Montana Tech took a 17-7 advantage into the locker rooms after a made field goal as time expired in the first half.
 
Casey Kautzman posted his second made field goal of the game for the lone score of the third quarter to put them up 20-7.
 
The visitors scored two more touchdowns in the fourth to seal the 34-7 victory.
 
 MONTANA TECH 
The Orediggers posted 474 total yards (306 rushing, 168 passing), four touchdowns, two field goals, and 25 first downs.
 
Wilson had 168 yards and one touchdown on 16 completions. He also had nine rushes and one rushing touchdown.
 
Jamal Cariglia led all players with 204 yards and one touchdown on 25 rushes. Merek Mihelish also ran one in on a 45-yard run.
 
Levi Torgerson led Montana Tech with seven receptions for 53 yards, followed by Kieran Netburn with three receptions for 39 yards. Peterson had one receiving touchdown.
 
The Orediggers tallied 50 tackles, 4.0 TFLs, one sack, and two interceptions, and one forced fumble on defense.
 
Kellan Beller led all players with eight total tackles while Christian Hansen led the game with six solo. Four players recorded 1.0 tackles-for-loss apiece while Trevor Miller earned Montana Tech's sack.
 
Cohen Kastelitz forced and recovered a fumble while Beller and Brett Grange each had one interception.
 
Kautzman was two-for-three on field goals in the game and made all four point-after attempts. He also had five kickoffs for 236 yards (47.2 per kick) and two punts for 81 yards (40.5 per kick).
 
Torgerson had one return for 22 yards.
 
 LOOKING AHEAD 
The Bulldogs are back home next week when they host Rocky Mountain. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT.
