(RV) Bulldog Football Gets Back on Track with 41-27 Victory at Dickinson State

DICKINSON, N.D. – The (RV) Montana Western football (2-2) team earned the 41-27 road-victory at Dickinson State Saturday afternoon.  

"We had a great preparation and travel for this road game," head coach Ryan Nourse said. "Dickinson came to win, played with pride and inspired effort. I'm proud of how we responded in the second half after a mistake-filled first half. We made stops on defense and attacked them on the ground and vertically making big plays. We improved greatly on last week and need to take that attitude into next week's prep for SOU."
 
STAT BREAKDOWN 
The Bulldogs posted 633 yards of total offense (384 passing, 249 rushing), six touchdowns, and 27 first downs in the contest.
 
Quarterback Kaden LaPlaunt shined with 384 passing yards and four touchdowns on 22 completions, including a long of 79. He also posted 38 rushing yards and ran in a TD.
 
Seth Shook caught three touchdown passes for the second week in a row while totaling a career-high 163 receiving yards. His 79-yard catch from LaPlaunt put the Bulldogs up 21-13 in the third.
 
Colton Cornwell registered eight receptions or a career-best 138 yards. Jack Daskam posted his best outing in the Red and Black with 48 yards on five receptions while Brody Munson earned one receiving touchdown and 35 yards.
 
Aidan Lammers ran for a career-high 103 yards to lead all players. Santana Luna posted a career-best 84 yards and one touchdown.
 
Connor Dunlea and Canyon Sargent tied for the game-high with nine total tackles apiece.
 
Sargent led all players with a career-high eight solo takedowns while also posted 1.0 tackle-for-loss and 1.0 sack (4 yards) in the contest.
 
Romeo Simpson, Bodie Smith, Cole Flugge, and Arie McLaughlin all recorded four tackles for UMW while Drew Humphrey snagged one interception.
 
18 different players registered at least one tackle for Western.
 
Maclain Burckley went 5-for-6 on PATs and averaged 59.7 yards per kickoff and 37.0 yards per punt.
 
Cornwell tallied two punt returns for 24 total yards and Munson ran back three kickoffs for 67 total yards.

GAME SUMMARY 
Both teams struggled to get going offensively through their first few possesions.
 
The hosts got on the board first with a 19-yard touchdown with under three minutes left in the opening period, and led 6-0 at the end of the first.
 
The Bulldogs pulled ahead by one, 7-6 on a 45-yard rush from Luna a third of the way through the second quarter.
 
They doubled their lead 14-7 on a nine-yard LaPlaunt quarterback keeper with under four minutes remaining in the half.
 
DSU scored again before the break and Western took the 14-13 lead into the locker room.
 
UMW began to pull away in the third with two touchdowns from Shook with seven minutes and five minutes on the clock in the third frame.
 
The Blue Hawks posted one touchdown in the third and trailed 28-20 going into the final 15 minutes of action.
 
Shook scored his third TD of the afternoon at the beginning of the fourth and Brody Munson caught the final score for the Bulldogs with over 12 minutes left in the game.
 
Dickinson State would score once more in the fourth, but couldn't overcome the defecit and the Bulldogs took home the 41-27 victory.
 
DICKINSON STATE 
Dickinson State put up 217 yards of total offense (233 passing, 84 rushing), four touchdowns, and 20 first downs.
 
Hudsen Grovom was responsible for all four touchdowns for the Blue Hawks, passing three and rushing the fourth. He garnered 266 yards of total offense.
 
Jackson Simonson led the team with 37 rushing yards while Kohbe Smith caught for a team-high 78 yards and one TD. Gage Gilbert and Adrien Calderon also earned receiving touchdowns for DSU.
 
Deegan Tvedt tied for the game-high with nine total tackles. Ryan Racht posted a team-best six solos while also forcing one fumble and snagging an interception. Shel Osborne also forced one fumble.   
 
Nik Halvorson was three-for-four on PATs, averaged 38.5 yards per punt and 59.6 yards per kickoff.
 
Scott Eckel returned two punts for 12 yards while Ty Dassinger and Connor Stanton both returned one kickoff for seven yards each.

LOOKING AHEAD 
Western is back home next week when it welcomes Southern Oregon to Bulldog Stadium (10/3). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT.
