Bulldogs Top Carroll 16-10

Helena, Mont. - The Montana Western Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0) opened the 2018 season with a 16-10 road victory over Carroll College (0-2, 0-2) Saturday at Nelson Stadium.

The defense led the way for the Buldogs opening game of the season, forcing  three turnovers with none bigger than a Jason Ferris' interception in the endzone in the game's final minutes.

Montana Western's defense wasn't just about late heroics as they set the tone for the game on Carroll's opening possession with freshman Garrett Turner forcing and recovering a fumble. The offense cashed in on the turnover with freshman quarterback Jon Jund leading the Bulldogs on an 11 play 48 yard drive capped off by Kylar Prante's one yard dive into the endzone.

The Bulldog offense was efficient from the opening snap led by Jund in his first collegiate start. The Nevada freshman was 18-34 passing for 209 yards and a rushing touchdown.  He was poised in the pocket, found the open receivers, tucked the ball and ran when needed, and didn't make the mental mistake one would expect from a freshman at the position.

The defense's held each other in check most most of the first half before Carroll found the endzone with just over two-minutes remaining in the half.

Jund responded with an nine play, 79-yard drive that resulted in a Mark Kharchenko chip shot field goal as the half came to close.

The Saints took a 10-9 lead in the late in third quarter. Jund responded again, this time guiding the Bulldogs on a 15 play, 75-yard drive the culminated in a one-yard plunge by Jund to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. The drive spanned two quarters and ate up nearly six minutes off the clock.

Now for Ferris' heroics. With Carroll trailing 16-10, Carroll quarterback Kolby Killoy rolled to his left with linebacker Kyle Shulte in pursuit. Killoy fired into the endzone and found receiver Sam Stratton in the endzone for what appeared to be the tying score, however Stratton couldn't corral the ball as Kyrin Allen and Ferris converged on him and the collision left Ferris standing with the ball and the Bulldogs with a chance to run out the clock with two-minutes and forty seconds remaining.

The UMW offense was unable to gain a first down. Carroll took over but Killoy's last second hail-mary landed in the waiting arms of Allen for the third Bulldog turnover and their first win in Helena since 2004.

"We want to play smart, tough, physical football, and it starts with our defense," head coach Ryan Nourse said. "We have a lot of guys who haven't played a lot of snaps and they played a ton (of snaps) today. They played great, they played physical, and played aggressive and I'm really proud of these guys."

The Bulldogs return home next week when they host the 1-1 MSU-Northern Lights on Sept. 8. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Vigilante Field.
