Bulldogs Edge Past Northwest University 61-59 in Caldwell

CALDWELL, Idaho - The Montana Western Bulldog Men's Basketball team moved on to 5-3 on their season after they defeated Northwest University (Wash.) this afternoon by a score of 61-59.  

How it Happened
The Bulldogs opened the game going down 12-2 in the first five minutes of the game. Three straight three pointers from Jamal Stephenson (2) and Ky Kouba (1) brought the score back within one point at 12:44 left in the first half. The Eagles went on a 7-0 run that gave them a seven-point lead with nine minutes left to go. After going back and forth for much of the remainder of the half yet still trailing the Easgles, the Bulldogs went down by two at 30-28 to the Eagles. Three Bulldogs led with six points at the conclusion of the half. Tanner Haverfield had five rebounds in the first half as the Bulldogs totaled 17 total, just one less than the Eagles. The Bulldogs outnumbered the Eagles in fouls 8-4 in the first half.

Jok Jok kicked the second half off with a layup that tied the game up at 30. Stephenson followed to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 33-30 following a made three-point shot. The Bulldogs continued to battle and was bale to stretch their lead to 10 with 2:07 left in the game. A five-point run put the Eagles back within reach; however, the Bulldogs outlasted the Eagles by a score of 61-59. The Bulldogs shot an impressive 54.2 percent from the field as a team in the second half alone, in comparison to the Eagles who shot 35.5 percent.

Notables
  • The Bulldogs outshot Northwest 44.4 to 36.7 percent from the field. However, the Bulldogs had more turnovers with 13 in the game, in comparison to the Eagles' nine.
  • The Bulldogs scored 58 percent of their points from the three-point line, the Eagles just 25 percent of their points from the arc.
  • The Bulldogs posted their best rebounding game this season thus far, with a team total of 35 total and eight offensive boards.
  • Jamal Stephenson led the Bulldogs with 17 points, seven rebounds, and shot 60 percent from the field. He also had a steal in the game.
  • Michael Haverfield each had 11 points in the game. Haverfield had a rebound and was 2-2 from the arc.
Up Next
The Bulldogs will be heading to North Dakota next weekend where they will face Dickinson State for the second time this season and Dakota State University. They will play Friday at 7PM MST and Saturday at 5PM MST.
