Bulldog Volleyball Loses Heartbreaking Five-Set Match to No. 15 Montana Tech

DILLON, Mont. – The Bulldog volleyball team fell to the No. 15 ranked Montana Tech Orediggers this evening in a five-set nail-biter. The Bulldogs entered the matchup coming off a 3-0 win over MSU-Northern last weekend. Jazi Smith had an outstanding evening as she tallied 24 kills with just five hitting errors. Kaylee Fritz had a career night as she had 52 assists in the match, just five assists shy of breaking the game assist record.

How it Happened
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start as they trailed the Orediggers for much of the first set. Despite falling in set one 19-25, the Bulldogs stepped up to the challenge in the second set and were able to take their first big lead of the game and win set two 25-21. The third set proved to be another trial for the Bulldogs as Oredigger server Logan Reed proved to be the Bulldogs biggest challenge. She served for five straight points to give the Orediggers a lead of 16-10. A kill by Peyton Vogl snapped the serving run, but the Bulldogs were never able to recover. The Bulldogs fell 17-25 after posting just a .094 hitting percentage and tacking on eight hitting errors. Despite the struggle, the Bulldogs put together a huge battle in set four and after hitting an impressive .280 with 16 kills, the Bulldogs were able to win 25-22 and force a deciding fifth set battle. Two straight kills by Smith and an Oredigger attack error gave the Bulldogs the lead at 10-8, but they would be unable to hang on to the lead. The Orediggers came out swinging and outscored the Bulldogs 7-2 to take the final set 12-15.

Smith led the Bulldog attack as she posted a whopping 24 kills, 13 digs, and three assists. Kaylee Fritz had a night to remember as she tallied 52 assists in the match and another 12 digs, her career assist best. Danyel Martin and KayLee Kopp combined for another 22 kills for the Bulldogs. Vogl, Martin, and Jordan Olson combined for the Bulldog's five blocks in the game. Kelsey Goddard and KayLee Kopp each had 20 digs in the match.
