CALDWELL, Idaho – The Montana Western Women's Basketball team defeated the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Classic host College of Idaho 70-53 this evening behind a standout performance from senior forward
Brynley Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald had her second double-double this season after she scored 30 points and picked up 11 rebounds in the game.
"Tonight was a great test for our team. We had to deal with a different style and a ton of adversity so any time you can find a way to win you have to be happy. I loved how we competed for 40 minutes to finish the trip out on a positive note." Head Coach
Lindsay Woolley said.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs were firing at all cylinders in the first quarter, holding the Yotes to just two points in the entire first quarter and to just an eight percent team shooting percentage. Up 19-2 heading into the second quarter, the Bulldog's offense continued to play well, though the Yotes' offense had sprung to life outscoring the Bulldogs 21-15 in the quarter. The Bulldogs headed into the half up 34-22.
Though allowing the Yotes to score five unanswered points to start the third quarter, the Bulldogs did not let it affect their offense as they answered with a layup and a three-pointer from
Brynley Fitzgerald just two minutes into the half. The Bulldogs would continue to stretch their lead to 16 points behind a made jump shot from senior
Mesa King that put the Bulldogs up 50-34. With 38 seconds left before the start of the fourth quarter,
Emma Anderson hit a pair of free throws to send the Bulldogs into the fourth quarter up 52-38. Fitzgerald sealed the score at 70-53 in the fourth quarter behind a layup that gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the game and the final points for either team of the game.
"Always good to get a couple of road wins! We are definitely ready for conference, still have some stuff to work on heading into next week. College of Idaho is a tough place to play and it resembles Carroll's atmosphere. We are ready to get back to work on Monday." Senior forward
Brynley Fitzgerald said after the win.
