Bulldogs Drop Two in College of Idaho Tournament

Vogl leads the Bulldogs with a total of 21 kills in both games.

CALDWELL, Idaho - The Montana Western volleyball team fell to College of Idaho and University of Saint Katherine tonight.
 
The Breakdown
The Bulldogs fell to College of Idaho three sets to zero before dropping the second game to the University of Saint Katherine three sets to one in a hard-fought battle, taking the Firebirds past 25 in two sets.

How It Happened
Montana Western (0-3) dropped sets, 21-25, 20-25, and 24-26 to College of Idaho (1-0).

The Bulldogs came out swinging in the first set as they quickly took a 6-1 lead behind a pair of kills from Morgan Stenger and KayLee Kopp. College of Idaho fought back in it to go on a 7-0 run on the Bulldogs. Vogl added two kills and a block to bring the Bulldogs back within three points towards the end of the set. College of Idaho took back the momentum and ultimately won the set 21-25.

Set two saw the Bulldogs go up 11-5 for the biggest lead on the Yotes in the game. The Bulldogs were then outscored 11-2 by College of Idaho. A pair of kills by Jordan Olson and Danyel Martin added the final two points in the set for the Bulldogs as they fell 20-25.

The Bulldogs again took a quick lead behind two big kills by Vogl in the beginning of the set. A 6-1 run by the Yotes closed the gap from 14-8 to 15-14. Olson and Kaitlyn Van Well each added a kill to give the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead. Vogl tallied her tenth kill of the game to tie the game up at 21. After a tough back and forth fight, the Yotes outlasted the Bulldogs to take the final set 24-26.
 
Montana Western (0-3) fell to the Firebirds after four, 26-24, 16-25, 21-25, and 24-26.

The Bulldogs began set one trading points back and forth with the Firebirds. UMW added five straight points to bring the score to 18-15. Martin tacked on five kills in the set as the Bulldogs battled back from a score of 19-24 to win the set 26-24.

Set two brought an early St. Katherine lead as they pulled out 6-11 early on. The Firebirds pushed their lead to 9-16 despite back to back kills by Vogl and Kopp. The Firebirds took the set 16-25. Fritz totaled 18 assists in the first two sets combined.

The Bulldogs trailed early in set three to the Firebirds. Two kills from Vogl brought the game back within two to 11-13. The Bulldogs saw back to back kills by Vogl and Kopp to bring the score to 19-20. The Firebirds finished the set 21-25.

The final set of the day saw the Bulldogs fight evenly with the Firebirds throughout the set. Back to back kills and an ace from Kopp gave the Bulldogs their first two-point lead of the set at 9-7. A kill by Stenger helped fuel a late rally that pushed the game past 25. The Firebirds finished up the set on top at 24-26 to win the game.

  • Vogl led the Bulldogs in the front row in both games with a total of 21 kills between both games.
  • Martin totaled nine kills against St. Katherine, five of which were in the first set.
  • Kelsey Goddard led the back row both games with 51 digs in the games combined.
  • Kaylee Fritz tallied 26 assists and eight digs.

Up next
The Bulldogs will close out their trip to Caldwell tomorrow with two games. They face off with #7 ranked Corban University at 9 a.m. MST and with the #23 ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) at 3 p.m. MST.
