CALDWELL, Idaho - The Montana Western volleyball team (0-5) finished up their trip to Caldwell with a pair of top 25 losses Saturday.
The Breakdown
The Bulldogs fell to #7 ranked Corban University (Ore.) three sets to zero before dropping their second game of the day to #23 ranked Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) three sets to one.
"It was a tough tournament with some really great opponents. It is going to help us in the long run this season by playing teams with such a high level of play." coach Lovett said.
How It Happened
Montana Western (0-5) dropped sets, 13-25, 18-25, and 17-25 to Corban University (2-1).
The Bulldogs battled early on in the first set, trailing only by one point at 8-9. However, the Bulldogs struggled to keep up with the firepower of the Corban front row attack, which led Corban to win the set 13-25. In set two, the Bulldogs were able to take the lead at 11-10 behind an ace from
Morgan Kirch. However, the Warriors then outscored the Bulldogs 15-8 to win the set. The third set saw the Warriors total 15 kills to win the set 17-25. The Bulldogs totaled 23 kills in the set while hitting .042. The Bulldogs were able to claim six blocks in the match, three of which were from
Danyel Martin and
Morgan Stenger.
Montana Western (0-5) fell to SAGU (4-0) after four sets, 9-25, 25-27, 25-20, and 19-25.
The Bulldogs struggled in the first set to get into a rhythm as the Lions came out to win 9-25. Set two saw the Bulldogs come out to an 11-4 lead on the Lions early on. The Lions fought their way back in it bringing the score to a 16 all tie. A string of aces by
Kaylee Fritz pushed the Bulldogs lead by two. Following a kill by
Jazi Smith and a Lions hitting error, the Bulldogs brought it to a tie at 25. The Lions took the set 25-27, however the Bulldogs were able to run on the momentum picked up to snag a huge win in set three 25-20. Set four proved to be a tough battle again for the Bulldogs. Although they were able to bring it within two points at 17-19 behind a kill from Smith, they were unable to hang on as the Lions pulled ahead to win the set 20-25.
The Bulldogs totaled 46 team kills while hitting .146 and adding a total of 72 digs and 8 blocks.
Notables
- Martin, Stenger, and Smith each tallied five kills in the first match.
- Kelsey Goddard led the Bulldogs in the back row with a total of 33 digs in both games.
- KayLee Kopp led the Bulldogs offense against SAGU with 13 kills.
- Smith added 11 kills and 2 blocks against the Lions.
- Fritz tallied 18 assists for the Bulldogs against SAGU.

The Bulldogs will be traveling to compete in the Labor Day Festival Tournament in Chandler, Arizona beginning Sept. 2 with back-to-back games against Park University Gilbert at 5 P.M. MST and Arizona Christian at 7 P.M. MST.
