SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Bulldog Women's Volleyball team continued their hot start with a 3-0 sweep of the Arizona Christian Firestorm (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) this evening.
Though trailing to start the match, the Bulldogs sprang to life and overpowered the Firestorm in three straight sets. Sophomore right-side hitter
Jordan Olson dominated through the match with 10 kills, four blocks, and a team high .714 hitting percentage.
"We went into the game really focusing on our side of the net and had a really good ball mentality," Olson said. "When it comes to tomorrow, we are really confident in the level of play our team has and we are excited for the challenge."
How It Happened
The Bulldogs got off to a sluggish start, trailing 18-9 to start the match. Following three aces from the Firestorm's Kaeleigh Gibson, the Bulldogs jumped back into it with a pair of kills from Olson. A 6-0 run brought the Bulldogs back within three and UMW continued on to outlast ACU 25-23.
The second frame started out much like the first, with the Bulldogs trailing four. A kill from
KayLee Kopp paired with a solo block from
Danyel Martin helped give the Bulldogs a push to tie the game at 7. Though the Firestorm grabbed a narrow lead, the Bulldogs took back the lead with back-to-back kills from
Jazi Smith and Martin and held on for the remainder of the set.
Set three saw the Bulldogs hit .323 across the set, while holding ACU to a mere .053 hitting percentage. UMW held much of the momentum and finished the set 25-18.
