UMW Men’s Basketball Rolls Over #14 Southern Oregon 85-65 Friday

DILLON, Mont. – The UMW men's basketball program (3-0) made light work of #14 Southern Oregon Friday night, earning the 85-65 victory. It marked their second 20-point win in as many days.
 
"I'm proud of how our guys competed and stayed connected throughout the weekend," head coach Patrick Jensen said. "We have a really big game Monday and need to be prepared for that."
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
 
Montana Western shot 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8-26) from distance, and 77.3 percent (17-22) from the charity stripe.
 
The Bulldogs held the statistical advantage in nearly every category, leading in rebounds (38-34), assists (13-10), and blocks (5-0). They also outearned the Knights in points in the paint (34-16), and points off turnovers (15-14)
 
The Raiders won the battle in steals (6-3), second-chance points (15-11), and bench points (23-21).
 
NOTABLES
Kyle Gruhler posted his second 30-point game in the last three games and has scored over 20 in every outing so far.
 
All 12 players that saw the court registered at least one rebound for Western.
 
The team committed under 10 turnovers for the second-straight contest (nine).
 
LEADERBOARD
 
Kyle Gruhler led all players with a career-high matching 32 points while Emanuel Steward (14) and Joshua Whiteside (10) were also in double figures.
 
Whiteside and Jacob Ankeny shared the team-lead in rebounds with five apiece.
 
Steward and Gruhler tied for the game-high in assists with three each
 
Steward, Whiteside, and Mark Huber each snagged one steal while Ankeny and Steward each swatted two blocks.
 
Whiteside led the Bulldogs with a 71.4 shooting percentage (5-7) while Gruhler led in both three-point percentage (40.0, 4-10) and free-throw percentage (100.0, 8-8)
 
GAME SUMMARY
The visitors jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the half, but the Bulldogs pulled level by midway through the period. They gained control,16-14, and never trailed again in the game. Western led by 14, 44-30, at the end of the half.
 
The Red and Black shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-16) from three, and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the line in the first half. The Bulldogs tallied 21 rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals in the period.
 
The Raiders briefly pulled within nine points in the second half, but UMW was able to stretch the lead again, eventually going up by as many as 21. The Bulldog defense stayed strong as time ran out, sealing the 20-point win.
 
THE OTHER GUYS
Southern Oregon shot 31.6 percent (18-57) from the floor, 29.6 percent (8-17) from three, and 67.7 percent (21-31) from the foul line in the contest. Joe Juhala put up a team-best 15 points with Elijah Jackson (11) and Trey Neff (10) in second and third, respectively. Bryce Dyer grabbed a game-best nine rebounds. Jack Chlumak's three assists tied for the game high. Juhala and Jace Anderson earned two steals apiece.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Western takes the court again Monday when they welcome NAIA Preseason #1 and reigning national champion College of Idaho.Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT.
