Bulldog Men’s Basketball Hangs On for 88-80 Win Over Dakota State

DILLON, Mont. – The UMW men's basketball program (17-8, 12-7 FC) held off Dakota State (16-18, 11-8 FC) 88-80 Friday evening.
 
The Bulldogs led by as 22 in the first half, but the visitors kept it interesting, pulling back within six with under a minute remaining in the game.
 
STAT BREAKDOWN
UMW shot 55.8 percent (29-52) from the floor, 43.5 percent (10-23) from downtown, and 69.0 percent (20-29) from the line.
 
The Bulldogs tallied 29 rebounds, 20 assists, nine steals, and three blocks.
 
They registered 32 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, 10 second-chance points, and 21 bench points.
 
LEADERBOARD
Emanuel Steward led all players in both points (25) and assists (seven).
 
Joshua Whiteside (17), Kyle Gruhler (13), David Young (12), and Mark Huber (11) also reached double figures in scoring.
 
Gruhler tied for the game-high with seven rebounds.
 
Mark Huber snagged a game-high three steals.
 
Whiteside, Jacob Ankeny, and Billy Carlson all swatted a block in the game.
 
NOTABLES
Whiteside shot 100.0 percent from the field (8-8) for a season-high in points.
 
Steward posted his second-straight 20-piece.
 
Young reached double digits for the eighth time.
 
Huber has three steals for the second-straight game.
 
The Bulldogs had 20 or more assists for the second time in the last three outings
 
Third straight game with over 80 points.
 
GAME SUMMARY
The Bulldogs got going early, thanks in part to three forced turnovers in the opening six minutes.
 
Four first-half threes from Steward and 16 points from Whiteside helped put Western up 20, 42-22, at the end of the first 20 minutes.
 
UMW shot 63.0 percent (17-27) from the field, 55.6 percent (5-9) from beyond the arc, and 60.0 percent (3-5) from the stripe in the first half.
 
The visitors went on an 11-3 run to start the second frame, cutting the lead to 12.
 
The Trojans continued to chip away at things throughout the remainder of the second half, getting as close as six twice down the stretch.
 
12 made free throws (including six by Huber) over the final two minutes of the game helped seal the eight-point win for the Bulldogs.
 
THE OTHER GUYS
The Trojans shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor, 36.0 percent (9-25) from three, and 87.5 percent (7-8) from the foul line in the contest. They posted 32 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals, and two blocks. Nathan Ojukwu and Kaleel Sutton-White shared the team-lead with 16 points apiece. Tyler Beckwith (14) and Brayden Pankonen (13) were also in double-figures. Beckwith tied for the game-high with seven boards. Sutton-White and Lukas Morgan each earned three assists while Sutton-White also paced the team in steals (two). He and Beckwith posted one block each.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow against Bellevue for "Senior Night." Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
