DARBY, Mont. - University of Montana Western graduate and rodeo student-athlete Gavin Knutson is no stranger to success in the arena, but it was his actions outside the arena this past weekend that left a lasting impression.
Competing at the Dutton Ranch Darby Xtreme Bareback event in Darby, Montana, Knutson earned a $10,000 bounty after successfully riding Pop the Cork of Red Eye Rodeo, the event's challenge bull. Rather than keeping the prize money for himself, he chose to donate the entire amount to a young girl battling cancer.
The gesture quickly gained attention, but for those who know Knutson, it came as no surprise.
A recent Montana Western graduate with a degree in Business, Knutson has built an impressive rodeo résumé during his time as a Bulldog. He is a four-time College National Finals Rodeo qualifier in bull riding and will make his first appearance at the CNFR in team roping this June. Last year, Knutson finished as the CNFR Reserve Champion Bull Rider and is the 2026 Montana Professional Rodeo Circuit Bull Riding Champion.
While his accomplishments in the arena are noteworthy, those closest to him say his character is what truly sets him apart.
"This gift was a true testament to Gavin's character, and we're so fortunate to have this type of individual representing not only Montana Western Rodeo, but the sport of rodeo itself," said Montana Western Head Rodeo Coach JT Robbins. "As coaches, we hope our student-athletes leave a legacy that goes beyond wins and championships. Gavin has done exactly that."
Throughout his time at Montana Western, Knutson has earned a reputation as one of the top competitors in collegiate rodeo and has put together one of the most successful careers in recent program history. Yet despite his success, he has remained grounded and focused on representing his family, teammates, and Montana Western with class and humility.
As Knutson prepares to compete in both bull riding and team roping at the College National Finals Rodeo, June 14–20 in Casper, Wyoming, and begin the next chapter following graduation, his impact continues to extend far beyond competition results. This weekend served as a reminder that some of the most meaningful victories happen outside the arena.
LOOKING AHEAD
Knutson and seven other Bulldogs will compete next week at CNFR.
