Bulldog Volleyball Goes 1-1 on Day One of Saints Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Montana Western volleyball team (1-1) split day one of the Saints Invitational Friday. The Bulldogs defeated tournament-host OLLU (0-1) 3-1 in game one before falling 3-0 to #16 Dakota Wesleyan (2-0) in the second fixture of the day.
 
 NOTABLES 
Sophomore outside hitter Averi Look matched her career high with 16 kills against OLLU. She also hit over .300 in both contests.
 
Jayda Ward dished out a career-high 18 assists against the Saints.
 
Jaiden Perez posted three solo blocks against Dakota Wesleyan.

 MATCH SUMMARY 
UMW vs OLLU
The Bulldogs scored the first point of the season, but OLLU responded with a 6-1 run to take a lead early in the first set. UMW regained the lead after a 6-0 run of its own. The Saints would tie the game twice more, at 11 and then at 20 points, but Western held strong at took the first set 25-22. In the second frame, the two sides traded points for nearly the entire set. The Bulldogs scored the final four points of the game to go up 2-0 with another 25-22 score. The hosts pulled one back in the third, outpacing UMW 25-18 for a 2-1 score headed into the fourth. In the final set, OLLU fought back from five down late in the set to put pressure on Western. Jaiden Perez and Averi Look delivered the final to strikes to give the Bulldogs the opening day victory.

Against Dakota Wesleyan, Western jumped out to an early 6-3 lead. The Tigers fought back into it and the two teams were evenly matched through the middle of the set. DWU pulled away 21-16, but the Bulldogs proved pesky and pulled within one point before the Tigers snagged the 25-22 set one win. In sets two and three, Dakota Wesleyan built a big advantage early, and despite continuing to fight late in the sets, Western wasn't able to close the gap and fell 25-18 and 25-15 to close out the day.

 SPLIT BOX 
UMW vs OLLU
The Red and Black held the statistical advantage in points (57.0-53.0), kills (44-41), aces (8-7), and assists (42-36). The two sides were even on blocks (5-5) while the Saints edged out the Bulldogs in digs (39-35).
 
UMW vs DWU
Western bested the Tigers in blocks (8-4) and the teams were even on service aces (2-2), but were outdone in points (38.0-48.0), kills (28-42), assists (26-35), and digs (39-51).

 ON THE HORIZON 
The Bulldogs are back on the court tomorrow when they face off against Campbellsville (10:30 a.m. MT) and Saint Francis (1:00 p.m. MT) on day two of the Saints Invitational.
