GULF SHORES, Ala. – Battling through weather, rescheduling and intense race tactics Eireann Rhein (O'Connor),
Jonathan Harrison, and
Morgan Baseley made the most of their trip to the NAIA Outdoor National Championships this week.
Starting bright and early on Friday morning,
Morgan Baseley competed in the Half-Marathon and finished 21
st. Baseley jumped out to a quick start, perhaps to quick, but was able to settle back into the race and ran a strong second half finishing with a time of 1:35:59.
"Morgan ran tough," said head coach
Dylan Zitzer. "The race was extremely difficult with rough conditions and she never backed down."
Jonathan Harrison earned his first ever All-American by finishing seventh in the 800m. In what was a very tough and tactical race Harrison finished with a time of 1:53.07. This is the first All-American for the men's team since bringing back the track program to UMW.
"I'm very impressed with the way Jonathan ran," said Zitzer. "He is our first male to earn All-American since we brought back the program and finished a very credible seventh place."
Eireann Rhein (O'Connor) in her final collegiate race finished ninth in a difficult 5,000m final, just missing out on another All-American by .5. Rhein, finishes off an incredible career for the Bulldogs breaking and setting several school records both in cross country and track.
"Eireann capped off her career with an extremely gritty ninth place finish, nearly catching the eighth-place runner after being down 10 seconds at the bell," Zitzer said. "She has been an amazing leader for five years and she leaves a lasting impact on the program."
