DILLON, Mont. – The no. 15 ranked Montana Western women's volleyball team (19-8, 9-5) lost their first fifth set matchup of the season this evening after they battled to the final point with the no. 19 ranked Montana Tech Orediggers (19-8, 11-3).
How It Happened
The first set was an exciting match that featured numerous runs by each team. It would be the Bulldogs to take the first swing, running on a 7-2 scoring run to take an 11-6 lead. The Orediggers followed, tying the game at 11 after their own 5-0 run. A kill by
Jordan Olson broke the run and would spark the Bulldogs on another 9-1 run that would hold steady enough for the Bulldogs to win the set 25-19.
Montana Tech took advantage of a set high of nine hitting errors to tie the game at one set apiece as they would win the second frame 25-22.
The third frame proved to be another teeter totter of action, seeing neither team take more than a two-point lead through the entire set. Tied at 22 all,
Peyton Vogl broke the stalemate with a kill and set Western on pace to claim the win.
Maxine Hoagland knocked down back-to-back kills to cap the set and win 25-22.
After taking a narrow one-point lead at 14-13 mid-set following a shot from
Savana Warburton, the Orediggers would run behind a 5-0 scoring run to take a four-point lead over Western. Despite picking up some momentum late in the set, MT would close the gap and win 25-23 to force a game five.
The fifth and deciding set took both teams for a wild ride, as both teams racked up more than ten kills and forcing extra points. Despite holding game-point twice in the set, the Orediggers fought back and capped the frame by outscoring Western 5-2 to win 20-18.
