BUTTE, Mont. – The Montana Western men's basketball team (3-1, 0-0) got back on track this evening as they defeated Northwest University (0-2) by a final score of 84-65.
How It Happened
Trailing 10-9 in the first five minutes of the game, the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of numerous trips to the free throw line to fuel an 18-2 scoring run to take a 27-12 lead.
Though broken up by a layup for the Eagles, Western's
Kyle Gruhler knocked down a three and threw down a dunk to lead the Bulldogs on another 8-0 scoring run.
Gruhler and
Jalyn Stepney would combine for five and cap scoring for the first half to lead Western into the break up 48-29.
Western wasted little time in continuing their roll over Northwest. Stepney and
Clarence Martin hit back to back threes within a minute of each other, putting the Bulldogs up 60-35 with under 15 minutes to play.
Northwest put in a last-ditch effort, running on a 17-3 scoring run across the last five minutes of the game. Despite the run, the Bulldogs' early lead was enough to keep the Eagles at an arm's length and take the 84-65 win.
