BUTTE, Mont. – The Montana Western track and field teams finished out their season this weekend with the Frontier Conference Championships this weekend, hosted by Montana Tech.
"I think overall both teams competed really well, starting with a strong start from Brant getting second in the 10k," head coach Taylor Grove said. "There were a lot of good races from there from both relays, Olivia placing in the 800m and then Isaiah in the 100m and 200m. Everyone had a good day and competed well within the conference."
Isaiah Thomas was crowned the Frontier Conference champion in the 100m dash this afternoon after he finished with a time of 11.38 in the race to earn all-conference honors.
Brant Heiner also earned all-conference honors after he claimed second in the 10,000m run with a time of 33:31.76.
"I expected the race to be tough, and it was. Getting all-conference for track as well as second place is one of my best achievements here at Western," Heiner said. "With that, I am very happy with how it went overall. I am so grateful for the amount of support I get from my family. They were cheering loud for me and I needed it."
Final Results
Heiner's 10k second place finish kicked off the weekend for the Bulldogs on the weekend that saw a pair of personal records and numerous podium finishes. Heiner also competed in the men's 5000m race, placing seventh overall with a time of 16:27.96.
Thomas went on to add to his accolades on the weekend by finishing third in the men's 200m race, recording a time of 22.75.
Layne Cooney set a personal record and a school record (as of 2017) in the men's shot put after he finished eighth with a 12.94m mark. Cooney also earned a podium finish in the men's discus throw after he finished fifth overall with a mark of 40.52m.
Carson Bain's 12.28m mark in the men's shot put was enough for his own personal record in the meet. He finished 10th overall in the meet while also matching that placement in the men's discus throw with a 36.56m throw.
Tad Tackes rounded out the Bulldog throws with a 17th place finish in the discus throw with a mark of 31.25m. He also competed in the men's shot put.
In the men's 800m, the Bulldogs had four competing.
Drake Delude placed eighth with a 2:04.04.
Brody Henry (10th, 2:06.27),
Landon Hayes (12th, 2:12.54), and
Kaden Hennessey (14th, 2:15.45) all finished the race as well.
Henry, Hayes, and Hennessey also competed in the men's 1500m race. Henry led Montana Western with a 12th place finish after a time of 4:34.13. Hayes followed in 13th with a time of 4:36.39 and Hennessey rounded out the Bulldogs with a 16th place finish and a time of 4:57.60.
Carlin Onstad raced in the men's 10,000m event, finishing in ninth with a time of 39:02.22.
On the women's side,
Olivia Heiner scored a podium finish with a sixth-place finish in the women's 800m. She finished the race in 2:29.38. Heiner also competed in the women's 1500m, recording a seventh place finish in 5:33.40.
Maddie Yakos also ran in the 800m, finishing 11th with a time of 2:38.94. Yakos also competed in women's 1500m race, finishing in 10th after finishing with a time of 5:35.21.
Freshman
Malia Cox competed in three events at the meet. She finished seventh overall in the women's 200m race with a 28.49. She also placed ninth in the women's 100m with a 14.01 and placed 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 4.63m.
Freshman
Justene Santi came in seventh in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:18.10. She also placed ninth in the women's 1500m race with a time of 5:33.40.
Three relay teams competed in the meet, with Thomas, Henry, Hayes, and Delude finishing in third in the men's 4x400m relay. Delude, Hayes, Hennessey, and Henry also finished fourth in the men's 4x800m race.
The women's 4x400m team that consisted of Cox, Yakos, Santi, and Heiner placed fifth in the meet.
