Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame
The 1963 Montana Western Bulldogs went
undefeated and were named the Montana
Collegiate Conference Champions for
the third straight year. They completed a
perfect eight game schedule during the
season and extended their league winning
streak to sixteen straight. Coach Frank Hoey
directed the squad in his second year as
head coach. He was assisted by Cecil Kent
and Pat Delger. Montana Western placed
nine players on the MCC All-Conference
squad, including Dick Maroney, Dick Doyle,
Butch Cobell, Jim Netz and Bud Talbott
on the offensive unit; and Gary McMorris,
Floyd Dahlman, Dale Combs, and Bob Burk
on the defensive unit.
The team also consisted of Gene Albright,
Wayne Allen, Jim Bennetts, Rick Cadieux,
Wayne Christensen, Ray Cyr, Mick
Delaney, Bill Donovan, Gary Douglas, Jerry
Fitzsimmons, Joe Holt, Bill Kuka, Len
Mackling, Rod McClellan, Jerry Melton, Walt
Musgrove, Cliff Neighbors, Jack Nielson,
Gary Pace, Fred Salmonsen, Bobby Joe
Sullivan, Jim Sumner, Larry Veis, Ken Walt
and Mel Wattula.
“I was honored to play with a great group
of ball players. Coach Frank Hoey was a joy
to play for and we wanted to excel for him
and Line Coach Kent,” said Doyle.
Teammates from the 1963 team had
tremendous respect for their fellow teammates
and coaches. Many commented that
this was an outstanding group of men to
play with and work together as a team.
