Larry McClung, a native of Wilsall, Mont., is a 1965 graduate of Western Montana College with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education.

McClung did two stints at Western Montana College (WMC). The first was from 1950 to 1952. At the 1952 NAIA national track and field championships in Abilene, Texas he finished sixth in the 800-meter and ran a leg on the fourth-place finishing relay team.

In that first stint at Western, McClung also lettered in football and basketball. Uncle Sam came calling and cut his first stay at Western short. He returned to the Dillon campus 10 years later. It seems that age only made McClung better.

During his second stint at WMC he established conference records in the 800, mile and two-mile runs. His 4:23.2 mile in 1964 was a school record. He set and broke the record in three consecutive weeks. The Bulldogs were the 1964 Montana Collegiate Conference champions. At the NAIA national meet, he placed seventh in the three-mile run.

McClung was selected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduation, McClung coached track and cross country in Shelby, Mont., leading the Coyotes to state championships in both and twice earning state Coach of the Year honors.
