Norman Jacobson, a native of Kalispell, Mont., is a 1952 graduate of Western Montana College with Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a major in general science and minors in English and mathematics.
He was a four-year Bulldog football letterman and a member of the 1949 conference championship team. Jacobson earned all-conference honors his senior season and was named team captain. He also lettered in track. Jacobson was active in M-Club and was selected to Who’s Who.
His teaching career began in Havre. He taught at the Franklin grade school in Missoula and while there, obtained a Masters in Secondary Education from the State University in Missoula in 1956.Â
He then applied and received a National Science Federation grant to attend Washington State University where he completed a Masters in Chemistry and Geology in 1965. He taught one year in Deer Lodge, Mont. before moving back to Missoula for a position at the University of Montana in 1966.
He taught aspiring science teachers how to be a science teacher. Jacobson closed his 32-year career in education at Missoula Hellgate High School. After retirement in 1984, he stayed busy as a computer service representative, serving on several state education committees, the Montana State Science Fair and the Northwest Career Education Committee.Â
Jacobson and his wife Maurine created the Jacobson Education Scholarship through the Montana Western Foundation which is given annually to an education major. Preference is given to a single parent with financial need who has leadership abilities striving to make something of themselves.
