Following a distinguished prep career at Beaverhead County High School, Don added an illustrious chapter in baseball history of Western Montana College. As a stylish lefthander with a tantalizing curveball, he won 23 consecutive Frontier Conference games before dropping his collegiate finale, 2-1, when unearned runs deprived him of victory despite a brilliant three-hit, 13-strikeout performance. During his senior season (1970) Don worked 58 league innings without allowing an earned run, gave up only 25 hits, struck out 96 and issued just 11 bases on balls. He was signed to a professional contract with the Kansas City Royals and spent two years with their triple-A farm club at San Jose, Calif. For the past 10 years, Don has been a member of the faculty staff at Stillwater (Minn.) Junior High School, where he has served both as a teacher and a coach.
