Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame
Emory “Moose” Rouse, a native of Anaconda, Mont., is a 1937 graduate of the Montana State Normal College (MSNC).
He was a two-time team captain, a three-time all-conference selection and a four-year basketball letterman, and at the time, only the second student-athlete to accomplish that feat in school history. Rouse led the team in scoring in his senior season.
His collegiate career was interrupted for a year when he played for the San Francisco Athletic Club. Rouse also starred on the Bulldog gridiron as dual-threat fullback.
He was an accomplished woodworker and displayed his work at several MSNC campus art shows. He served as the business manager of the junior class.
After graduation, he taught industrial arts for five years in his home town of Anaconda. During his time as a teacher and coach in Anaconda, he played football with the Anaconda Anodes independent team and AAU basketball with the Butte All-Stars. Rouse enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the classroom and gymnasium as a teacher and coach at Corvallis High School.
He changed careers in 1948 with the purchase of the Sunny Slope ranch in the Big Hole Valley of Southwest Montana. In 1986, Rouse retired from ranching. He and his wife Adele were the proud parents of five children, the proud grandparents to many grand and great grandchildren. He passed away Feb. 25, 1999.
