Wilford Poppie, a native of Victor, Mont., is a 1931 graduate of the Montana State Normal College (MSNC).

Poppie was a star for the Bulldogs in the early days of athletics on the MSNC campus. He came to MSNC after earning 11 athletic letters at Corvallis High School. He participated in basketball, football and track.

He was the Bulldog’s quarterback helping to build the football program in its early years. As a track star, he personally accounted for all of the points accumulated by MSNC track teams in two different meets, an achievement which has few parallels in the nation at that time.

He was active on campus, serving as M-Club president, playing in the campus orchestra, participating in several Gargoyle productions, was a member of the student activity committee, was the booster club vice president and the junior class treasurer.

In 1934, he began a long teaching and career (38-years) at Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Mont., which included teaching, coaching and administration. He was active in the Hamilton community as a member of the Lion’s Club and other civic organizations.
