Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame
In 1977, the Bulldogs football team claimed
the Frontier Conference title. Under head
coach George Nelson, the Bulldogs beat Montana Tech 34-7 and then downed
Carroll College 17-14 Oct. 15, 1977,
for the conference championship.
That year, ten members of the team were
named to the All-Conference first team
while another five were named to the
All-Conference second team. Nelson was
named Coach of the Year. Michael Bailey,
Mike Holder and Chuck Lucero served
as assistant coaches in 1977.
Teammates from the 1977 team still
hold onto their Bulldog pride and cherish
the memories they made on their way to
the conference championship.
“The thing I remember was the outstanding
leadership of the upperclassmen on
the football team,” said Brad Johnson.
“The hard work during practice by these
men influenced all of us to try and work
our hardest.”
Another teammate Roger Willhite
remembers the strong bond the team
developed over the course of the 1977
season.
“A number of guys came together and
became friends forever,” said Willhite.
“The memories are continually shared
over and over and over. The friendship
and closeness is hard to match.”
